The book that I just finished is called Malibu Carmie by Leah Komaiko. This book is about a girl named Carmie who has a mom who always seems to be depressed. Carmie and her best friend Jenny, convince Carmie's mom to take them to Malibu Beach. Once they get there, Carmie realizes something. She realizes that her mom used to be a really good surfer.
Dear Carmie,
I have a few questions that I would like to ask you. What were you first thinking when you went to Malibu for the first time? Were you surprised? What did it feel like to get "punched" by your board? I surf but that has never actually happened to me. What was the reason you wanted to go back to Malibu? Was it Coady? Or did you actually want to learn to surf? Do you think that one of those Malibu girls was Coady's girlfriend? You mentioned that you wanted to be a movie maker, why is that? Do you love adventure? Romance? I've also noticed that your play writes are about you and something that you wish happened to you. Why do you do this? Do you wish that was what your life was? Do you think people with "those" types of lives are happier than you? What do you think caused your mom to get so happy when she reunited with her surfer friends? Which do you like better; the happy mom or the depressed sad one?
Thank you,
Samantha
